The 2026 cars are designed to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly compared to current models.

Formula 1 has revealed the official language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The sport is embarking on what is potentially the largest regulation change in its long history next season, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased energy storage, requiring significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage ERS energy – sometimes even qualifying laps – to achieve the optimal performance.

Wide-ranging research were undertaken with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which phrases would improve understanding of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to make a series of complex features of the sport as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the active aerodynamics – have been abandoned in favour of straightforward terms that succinctly convey the primary purpose of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that competitors will have greater control to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, regeneration, and conservation.

The new regulations introduce a range of settings that will be shown on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy deployable when a car is within one second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It grants the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these key functions will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is strictly limited.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – opening on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and angling down in the bends for maximum downforce.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in certain corners where only partial power is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – both wings will open on the straight sections to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for peak handling.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the petrol engine and the ERS, increasing from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The energy recovery system is simplified through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey device that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from biomass or synthetic production methods.
