Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to duplicate the special mission he experienced as the national team coach.

Southgate suggested his plan to channel his attention toward supporting young people and countering what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook presently prevalent in the country.

Exploring Different Paths Away from Football

Speaking on air, the manager was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Mentorship

Ahead of the release of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, Southgate emphasized that he is deeply committed about providing role models for the youth, applying insights from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, Southgate commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

He asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the cultural focus often centers on conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His new release, titled Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on management and national identity drawn from his remarkable time in football.
